When Chris and I first got married a short 6 1/2 years ago, I was discovering my style. (Truthfully I still am and I’m confident I always will be.) I was in my last year of school and I was learning so much about what I loved and didn’t love. My professor was showing us photos of the many interior styles that existed and at the end of the slideshow she asked us which style we liked the most. If I remember correctly, I’d say a solid 80% of us (including myself) said we loved traditional homes and there was one gentleman sitting next to me that said he loved modern design.
I remember wondering how he could possibly like modern design…which is funny now because for the last 4 years I have resonated with modern interiors the most. In fact, I think a LOT of people abandoned the traditional ship and started leaning towards simplified modern designs. BUT within the last couple of months I’ve noticed a shift in interiors again. A shift back to the classics…back to the intricate details…back to traditional designs.

We’re seeing more pleated empire shades and dark woods. Persian rugs (and their lookalikes) have been around for a while now and vintage art continues to rise in popularity. So ya, I think it’s safe to say that traditional is back!
I still love and appreciate modern design but I’m definitely drawn to this new style as well. My home is primarily modern and in an effort to not scrap all the work we’ve done or have half my home one style and the other something completely different, I’m making small (less permanent) transitions. I’m incorporating traditional elements to create a style that I would call “modern traditional.”

Currently I’m focusing on adding decor that has traditional vibes and maybe down the road I’ll see how I feel about mixing traditional and modern furniture in our home. But for now I’m drawn to the little things like weathered artisan vases, vintage lamps, artwork with intricately carved frames, and maybe even a little color here and there too…maybe.

In summary, I’m adding character to our modern style and simplifying the sometimes busyness of traditional design. Hence – “Modern Traditional.”
To get the ideas flowing, here are 24 pieces I love that could add a touch of traditional charm to your home! I like to call them Traditional Transitionals. 🙂

Where did you find that Parisian looking living room light fixture?
Hi Ann! Unfortunately I don’t have the source. I gathered the photos in this post from a handful of talented designers. You can find links to the original designers under each photo.
