Dear danica,
Could you help me add character to our primary bedroom? Or bring it all together while also including a small space for baby due in 6 weeks? Considering paneling, staining nightstands, limewash walls, new pillows, anything to give it some character but not let it get busy. It all feels a bit bland right now.

First and foremost, congratulations on your baby! It’s an honor to get to dream up a character filled bedroom for you!
When I want to infuse character into a room, I focus on the walls and the architectural features first, then the furnishings. I have found that homes feel much more “complete” when architecture fills the “character” role and furnishings play a supporting role. And so, when I think about adding character to your bedroom, my first recommendation would be to add some form of wall treatment to create texture and dimension within the space.
You mentioned doing lime wash on the walls and I think that is a great idea! This will add movement and texture without requiring an extensive amount of work. I would recommend sampling Half Moon Bay by Portola Paints. It’s a tranquil green/gray that would serve as an incredible backdrop to the remainder of your bedroom furniture and decor.
As for the rest of the space, this is what I’m thinking –
A Character Filled Bedroom
The color palette I envision is green, blue, and hints of red throughout. Starting with the bed, I like the idea of introducing curves to soften the linear look of the room. This camelback headboard with a pale blue pinstripe is a classic shape in a classic color. A pair of antique brass wall sconces that flank the headboard add another soft curve. For your nightstands, I love the ones you have! You could keep them as is or paint them black.
Your current green velvet curtains are great and I would keep those as well! As for the windows on either side of your bed, I would recommend roman shades. I personally love these Sara Le floral shades!
The wool rug pulls colors from the wall, artwork, and window treatments featuring greens, browns, and rust. Watch it come to life when surrounded by the other furnishings!
For baby’s corner, I love this green plaid armchair! The classic traditional pattern and color palette pairs beautifully with the wall color. If you want a chair that glides, I also love this chair in the same plaid fabric! And for baby’s dresser, I love the shape and wood tone of this three drawer dresser with a marble top.
From there, you can fill in the walls with artwork. A scene of birds in the sky and red poppies against a rust background create little pops of color.
Does this get the ideas flowing? My hope is that this creates a solid starting point for you to take it and run with it!

I love your board of ideas. Do you have any tips for how to limewash? I have a new construction home that I’m working on making it NOT look like everyone else’s house. I love the idea of limewash but 1) idk how to get the right affect 2) I have 11′ textured walls. Will it work on texture? Thanks
