I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s been a subtle shift in the types of rugs we’re seeing in designer homes. For the longest time, vintage inspired rugs with faded motifs dominated the design world, but as of late we’re seeing more and more geometric patterned rugs taking their place. Some geometric patterns are so subtle that they err on the side of solid.
I for one welcome this change. I still love vintage rugs and they’re not going anywhere just yet, but I equally love seeing a variety. It finally feels like we’ve taken a step outside of what’s expected. Perhaps it’s because designers are playing around with organic patterns in custom upholstered furniture, resulting in a need for a more subtle, geometric base.
I myself am drawn to smaller, more subtle geometric patterns. They feel less busy and overwhelming for my brain and play a supporting role in the design of a room. But I do have a strong appreciation for bold geometric rugs with a classic pattern – a plaid or a diamond for example. They play more of a main character in the design of a room while the furnishings support. Both have a place in design and both are beautiful.
Wayfair’s selection of geometric patterned rugs is vast and they carry some of my favorite brands. This wool gridded rug has been a favorite of mine for a year while this plaid runner is a new-to-me find – I’m shocked how affordable it is! To start your geometric rug collection, I rounded up 14 I love!
