I am from the North of England and came across this site. I live in an old farmers house and have to say you have hit the nail on the head with many of the typical features found in our houses! I chuckled to myself as I read this and looked around. A lovely site to read through.

I’m in a basement/celler of a 1850 home in Wilmington De. USA and I am attempting to make it looks as much as possible like a tiny English cottate. We have wooden beams, but since it once served as a basement/cellar it has pipes and wire ( which I did manage to have them put through the beams. It is so inspiring to see all of these lovely English true cottages!!!!! Once I get things to a certain point I might get up the never to show you all!! Have a great day, Mary

I’m so excited for you and your project! Wooden beams and low ceilings are a match made in heaven for a cottage design! Please oh please share the end result with me when you get there! 🙂

I think it’s easier to pull off this look in a home with lower ceilings. They add to the coziness of the space.

I favor English cottage over French cottage. Can you recommend some interior neutral paint colors for walls.

I like "Nautica White" by Nautica at Home, "Shoji White" by Sherwin Williams, and "Gracious Greige" from HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams
