Remember the days as a kid when you played with play-doh and sculpted (more like squished) the play-doh into the most magnificent object your 5 year old self had ever seen? Well get ready to channel your inner kid for this next DIY project!
These clay coasters can be shaped and personalized however you like and the best part about it is that it only took me 1 1/2 hours to make from start to finish!
By the way, these would also make awesome gifts for birthdays, weddings, and Christmas!
Alright I’ve talked them up enough…let’s get started!
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Rolling Pin (one that you don’t use for food) or any cylinder object
Coaster (to use as a size reference)
STEP 1 – ROLL OUT THE CLAY
Grab your clay and start working it into a play-doh like consistency. Roll it into a ball and use a smooth cylinder object (I used a spray paint can) to flatten the clay. Roll it out until you get it to your desired thickness. I rolled mine to approximately 1/2” thick.
STEP 2 – CUT OUT THE SHAPE
Using an existing coaster as a guide, cut the clay with an x-acto knife. Smooth out the edges for a polished look.
STEP 3 – STAMP WITH LETTERS
Grab your letters and start stamping. You can choose whatever word, name, or phrase that you’d like! I’d suggest practicing on scrap clay to make sure you get the spacing and pressure right.
STEP 4 – BAKE
In order for the clay to harden you’ll need to bake the coasters. Bake them according to package instructions. For the Sculpey clay I used, I baked them at 275° for 30 minutes. (15 minutes for every 1/4” thick) Just a heads up, your coasters will still be slightly flexible after baking but will harden more as they cool.

DO YOU WANT
So as a coaster the clay would end up gettinv wet is that not.a problem for this type of clay? I notice there was no sealant on it…. my other question is can you just wipe it off if you got coffee rings on it?
Hi Gabrielle, I’ve used my coasters for nearly 2 years and haven’t had any issues with them getting wet. I haven’t gotten any coffee rings on mine but I’m assuming they’d wipe up easily with soap and water or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
