Umm…can we just take a second to look at how adorable that rope basket is?! I made it last weekend and it happens to be one of the easiest DIY projects ever…AKA anyone can do this! No sewing, no measuring….just some rope, hot glue and Netflix binging. Shall we get started?
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
1″ Natural Cotton Piping – 33 yards total
Hot Glue Sticks – You’ll need a lot!
Clear Tape
STEP 1: GLUE THE PIPING INTO A SPIRAL COIL
First things first, take one end of your rope and wrap a little clear tape around it. This will keep your rope from fraying.
Begin gluing the piping into a tight coil. Don’t leave any gaps without glue!
Once you’ve glued a large coil, grab your trash can and flip it upside down. (BTW the trash can is going to serve as your template) Place your coil on the base of the can and continue wrapping and gluing until you’ve reached the same diameter as the base of your trash can (like in the image above).
Once your rope coil is the same diameter as the base of the can, glue one more layer of piping around to ensure your coil is approx 1″ wider than the base of your can.
STEP 2: FLIP THE CAN AND CONTINUE GLUING
Now flip the trash can right side up and continue gluing your piping up around the trash can to form a basket. Again, don’t leave any gaps without glue!
I should also say that you’ll want to make sure you’re not accidentally getting any glue on the trash can. That’ll make it difficult to remove later on.
Once you get to the end of your rope, wrap the end of the piping in clear tape again to keep it from fraying. Then secure the end of the rope to your basket with hot glue.
Remove the trash can.
STEP 3: ATTACH THE LEATHER HANDLES
Take your leather hole punch and punch two holes in each leather strap. Push the screw posts through the holes.
Poke a small hole in your basket for the screw posts to fit through.
Push the screw posts through the holes in the basket and screw in the back end of the posts. Add more hot glue around the screw posts if necessary.
You’re done!
Super easy right!? This is a perfect weekend project that is actually kinda therapeutic. Use it as a blanket basket, fill it with yarn, or toss the kids toys inside! Now go get the supplies and give it a try!
NOTE: Since this basket isn’t sewn together it’s best that you lift it carefully from the bottom. If you want to go the extra mile you can stitch the piping together to ensure it won’t come apart. But if you can’t sew don’t worry, I’ve had a couple no sew baskets for 2 years with no issues!
