Regardless of whether you have an open concept house or a floor plan divided into rooms, you’re bound to have rugs near each other. When you’re standing on one rug and can see another, it’s important to make sure they compliment each other.
A couple years ago I pulled together a bunch of rug pairings and I still think they’re lovely. This week I’ve been working on 9 more rug pairings that I love.
The Key To Pairing Rugs Near Each Other
MIX PATTERNS
An organic patterned rug paired with a geometric rug is the first thing I focus on.
PICK COMPLIMENTARY COLORS
Sometimes I pull secondary colors from one rug to use as the primary color of the second. Other times I work with complimentary colors like blue and orange, green and red, gold and purple. And sometimes I pair a colorful rug with a neutral rug. All are great ways to pick complimentary colors.
1 – BROWN & BLUE
My Favorite color combo for the past 2-3 years has been blue and orange (or brown). These complimentary colors have a richness that make a space feel elevated. The small organic pattern paired with the simple blue stripe makes a classic combo.
2 – GREEN & RED
Another color combination that’s been on my radar recently is green and red. And it’s worth noting that these are (once again) complimentary colors on the color wheel. The diamond rug that resembles a classic checker floor feels refined with an unexpected green and tan colorway. Pair that with a rich red and black hand-knotted medallion rug for a timeless combination.
3 – COLORFUL & NEUTRAL
The simplest way to put rugs together is to pair a colorful rug with a neutral rug. And that’s exactly what this pairing is. A beautiful red and sage rug paired with a wool charcoal grid rug is as simple as it is timeless.
4 – BIG PATTERN, LITTLE PATTERN
The diamond jute rug is a unique take on a checker rug and I love the subtle pattern that the texture creates. Pairing that large patterned rug with a small patterned blue rug is a beautiful combination.
5 – CIRCLES & STRIPES
Although some may say not to place two geometric rugs near each other, the simplicity of the stripe is what makes this pairing work. The rich Moroccan copper rug with pops of blue connects to the subtle blue stripes in the beige and brown rug.
6 – MOTIFS & GRIDS
Some say it’s blue, some say it’s green, some say it’s gray…that’s the beauty of this incredibly versatile Persian influenced rug. Paired with a neutral beige rug that has all the texture and a subtle grid pattern…it’s a tasty combination.
7 – A FRESH TAKE
If you like a bold, medallion rug with a non-traditional colorway, I found it! This stunning wool rug features peach, blue, brown, and beige in a whimsical pattern. As to not overpower the bold medallion rug, I paired it with a hand-loomed beige and brown rug. This rug serves as the supporting role, yet it’s not to be overlooked. I love the fresh take on a gingham pattern.
8 – PLAID & BOTANICAL
Say you have a den, an office, or a playroom at the end of the hall. This beige and gray plaid rug is what I envision for the space. But of course, you need a rug for the hallway too and they need to correlate because you can see them both at the same time. This machine washable rug with a faint botanical detail is plaid’s faithful companion.
9 – TWO PEAS IN A POD
I could stare at this dainty blue rug for hours and it would be the sweetest addition to a girl’s room. And when you place this contemporary blue striped jute rug next to it…they’re two peas in a pod.
