Gosh, I have so much to fill you in on! So here’s the backstory – in April Chris and I made a list of 10(ish) projects we want to tackle this summer. All of which are exterior related! Our main projects on the list include replacing portions of the metal siding and painting the exterior. After making that list we had a hail storm which damaged our roof, gutters, downspouts, and the siding on the back side of our house. Thank goodness for homeowner’s insurance! Our roof, gutters, and downspouts have since been replaced (although the photos don’t show the new gutters) which leaves us with the siding…
After talking to a few contractors we realized that replacing just a few portions of the horizontal metal siding may be more difficult than we initially thought. There were two issues: 1) Finding a perfect match was apparently going to be difficult and our state has a clause that insurance doesn’t need to pay for a perfect siding match…it just needs to be close. 2) There are other portions around the house (not affected by hail damage) that are rusting or dented and we’d have to pay quite a bit out of pocket to get those areas replaced…steel siding isn’t cheap! It was starting to feel like an expensive patch job.
So after doing a lot of math, pros + cons lists, and siding shopping, it became apparent that our best option will be to replace the siding on the entire house! Which if we’re going to do that…we want to pick a completely different style and material!
We did a lot of research and I think we have a rough game plan!
We’re doing dark board and batten with weathered gray cedar shake accents! We wanted something that felt true the home’s original style with a modern twist and this combo will blend perfectly with our personal style too! I’ve been saving so many inspo pictures on my Pinterest account but this exterior by Collective Office convinced us that we’re on the right track. (Those weathered gray cedar shakes are killing me in the best way possible!!!)

Metal board and batten is stunning, but we actually want a material that’s a little less modern so we’re thinking hardie board at the moment. We’re not sure about a paint color yet either but we know we want something dark. Although all the inspiration photos I’ve saved have black siding, I think I want something slightly different….something with a little more color. We’ll start narrowing down color options once the siding is actually up and we can see how the colors read on the new material. But for now, we’re thinking either a really deep green, maybe blue/green, or a moody brown with hints of black!

Now comes the part where we practice patience. Most likely we won’t be tackling the board and batten until late summer/early fall and the cedar shake shingle siding might not happen until next year! 🙁 But we have a LOT of prep work to do in the meantime which will keep us plenty busy.
As usual, I’ll keep you posted with all the updates!
