Everyone was painting their walls gray in the 2010’s…myself included. Gray was the “IT” color and unlike many of its fellow trending colors (I’m talking about you mint green) it maintained its popularity year after year.
Then, as trends inevitably fade, gray was replaced with white. Suddenly everyone was painting over their gray walls with a crisp white that felt so fresh and rejuvenating. White paired with the coveted Mid Century Modern furniture was the ultimate dream home. And while white still remains a prominent choice, it’s met with new competition…beige.
Just like gray and white, beige took the world by storm. Beige walls, beige sofas, beige rugs, beige art….beige clothes, beige water bottles, beige Christmas trees. It has become so popular that TikTok has coined the term “beige moms.”
So the burning question is…is beige the new gray? Will beige go out of style?
Despite color making a strong comeback in the last couple of years, beige still remains popular. But despite this, there’s a strong possibility that beige will fall out of “style.” Peter Spalding said, “Anything that defines one decade is likely to be out of fashion the next.” Beige absolutely defines our current design period and we can expect to see beige fall out of popularity. Maybe not forever, but for a period of time.
To play devils advocate, every color, when incorporated in a new way that’s different from what’s popular or expected, is likely to transcend trends. Light gray walls, for example, may not be the popular choice currently, but color drenching a room with a midtone blue-gray is quite beautiful! In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see gray make a comeback soon.
What neutral paint color is timeless?
White has faded in and out of popularity over the decades, but it has proven to be a timeless color. Even when beige and gray were popular, white held its own. It’s a classic neutral base for the surrounding furnishings.
The versatility is another positive attribute. Whether it’s a pure white or a warm white…both are classified as white, yet both produce vastly different feelings within a home. This gives you creative freedom to choose a white that’s best suited for your home while sticking with a “timeless” color.
Most Importantly…
The best thing you can do is to decide what you think is beautiful, regardless of what’s trending and what’s not. Discover your personal style and move forward with that unapologetically.
