We have a fairly neutral living room with a cream sofa and every time I tried to add colorful pillows, I ended up returning them because they just didn’t mesh and they stood out too much. I always wondered why colorful pillows in our neutral room felt so off. And then last week I was reading this book and it addressed this exact issue! Suddenly it clicked for me.

The Reason That Pop Of Color Doesn’t Look Good In A Neutral Room

“Many of the people who want more color in their home find that the various color details they add stand out rather than blend in. If you scatter a couple colorful pillows on a white sofa, for instance, they tend to behave like difficult guests and take over the whole show rather than join in with the rest of the furnishings. In the end, you can’t stand them any longer and get rid of them, which is precisely the wrong thing to do: instead of removing them, you should add to them. Colorful pillows need colorful companionship, and the room, in this case chalk white, needs more shades to act as a bridge between the white and the contrasting details.”

In other words, a neutral room needs more than just one pop of color in one location. Add more color and more shades, in more substantial ways than just pillows, in all areas of the room to allow the color the blend in rather than stand out.

OTHER NOTABLE THINGS

Google showed me an ad for this all natural self tanning mousse and I bought it on the spot. Love it!! The best part? IT’S CLEAR! Which means it doesn’t transfer onto my sheets at night. (Trust me, I tried it with my favorite white sheets multiple times and not a trace of tanner on them.) But the real star of the show is their facial tanning oil that you mix with your lotion. Not sticky, not blotchy, and again – NO TRANSFER!!! I’ve been using the ultra dark for summer and medium-dark for winter.

I was in a pinch for a manicure and I found these press on nails at Target. By far my favorite nails I’ve ever used. So natural looking! And there’s a tab you can use to apply them…genius!
