Last month was filled with many incredible things…but the completion of our flagstone patio was perhaps the most rewarding! To recap, one of the biggest priorities for our backyard was to create a comfy seating area. With such idyllic weather from May to September, we work from outside daily and host frequently. Thus, a patio became essential for us.
While the backyard renovation is still in the beginning stage, I couldn’t wait to share the patio! Shall we do a before and after/currently?
If you’re a visual learner, you’re welcome to watch the installation process on my Instagram account @nadine_stay. (Just click on the highlight bubble titled “Maine Exterior 2”) In summary, Chris staked down underlayment to prevent weeds, then he poured 3/8″ crusher dust for the base. We positioned the large flagstones first and filled in the gaps with smaller pieces, leaving the pieces that needed to be cut in place for the very end. Then began the long process of leveling each stone while simultaneously creating a gentle slant, away from the house, for water to shed. Once leveled, the base needed to be packed under each stone to eliminate wobbles. And finally, we used gray polymeric sand to fill in the gaps.
The flagstone we chose is called Dove Gray standup flagging.
The day after Chris completed the patio, our new patio chairs arrived and they’re just as beautiful in person as they are online! The pewter distressing on the metal is perfection, and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever sat in a more comfy outdoor chair! Thinking we need a coffee table now too, so the hunt has begun.
What’s Next?
There’s still so much to come next year for the backyard – plants and grass being the biggest missing pieces. We shaped the landscape beds and filled them with brown mulch a few months back. So everywhere you see mulch, there will be an abundance of plants next spring! Until then, this patio is already getting a lot of daily use and we couldn’t be more grateful for it!
HI! Love this, gorgeous!! What do you do, though, with regard to outdoor cushions and the elements? Dust and dirt is one thing, but what about rain and mold? What are your solutions? I gave up with cushions after many valiant efforts to save them and now love the comfort of teak with all weather polyethylene wicker.
Hi Laura, we put chair covers over them when it rains and if they happen to get damp, we let them dry fully before covering them to prevent mold. Haven’t had any issues with mold yet!
I have been wanting to do this in my backyard, too. I knew it would be a slow process, so I was anxious to see the video. The link states, “Sorry, this page isn’t available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed.”
what a lovely patio. Laying down huge stone like that is hard work, but the result is perfect. What a nice job fitting the pieces together! Look forward to seeing further progress.

Thank you so much! It was certainly an exhausting task, but we’re so happy with how it turned out!
