Our guest bedroom has been begging for some love since we moved in. The wallpaper border, cold white walls, and furniture remnants were uninspiring. A full renovation is likely to happen years down the road, but until then, I decided to give this room a refresh. In the end, I kept most of the furniture that was already in the room. A new paint color, curtains, bedding, and some second-hand finds were the biggest things needed to pull this room together. Take a tour of the bedroom makeover –
The Paint Color
My typical choice for a paint color is generally on the warmer side. Olive greens, reds, and yellows feel natural to me. But the muddy pink hue of this color has been tempting me for some time, and our guest bedroom felt like the perfect opportunity to try it. The walls are painted Dead Salmon by Farrow & Ball – a dusty pink that fluctuates from lavender to mushroom depending on the light and time of day. To soften the contrast, I painted the ceiling Scallop by Farrow & Ball – a pale pink that’s several shades lighter than Dead Salmon.
The Curtains
I spent a great deal of time sifting through fabric for the curtains. I had a vision of what I wanted, and finding it proved to be difficult. But this floral stripe and deep burgundy jacquard fabric matched my vision to a T. I’ll be sharing more specifics on the curtains in the next few days, so stay tuned!
The Bedding
Simplicity was my goal when it came to the bedding. A set of white linen sheets and a dainty floral quilt feels incredibly charming, yet still leaves the focus on the bed frame. The ticking stripe bed skirt is also a favorite of mine.
The Things I Kept The Same
It’s hard to call this project a makeover when so many of the elements stayed the same. But when you love something, why change it? The antique pineapple bed frame was one of the first purchases I made when we moved in. I found it on Facebook Marketplace and drove 2 hours to pick it up. It’s one of my prized possessions, and I designed the room around it. (P.S. It’s a full-size bed frame, but I converted it to fit a queen mattress. See how I did that here.)
The rug, vintage wood chest, and swivel chairs also stayed the same. I was glad they worked with the final design because those are big-ticket items to replace.
The Antique Finds That Made All The Difference
Most of this room is furnished with either antique or second-hand finds. The carved wood shelf, round side table, artwork, nightstands, bed frame, 3-drawer chest, and needlepoint footstool are all antique.
All other decor was sourced from local thrift stores. I have far better luck finding unique and affordable lamps, pottery, books, baskets, and decorative trinkets at second-hand shops than online. I welcome the hunt with open arms!
