You know when you buy a new car, and then suddenly you see the same car everywhere? That’s what has been happening to me with a very particular seagrass rug. This rug has quietly served as the foundation of countless designer homes for 5 years, and it’s still going strong. Where is this rug from, and how has it stayed so popular for so long? I have a few theories…

The rug that designers such as Heidi Caillier, Jake Arnold, Plaster & Patina, and Amanda Khouri love is the Original Seagrass rug from Rush House. It’s made from “hand-pulled seagrass, which is dried in the sun, braided into long, golden strands, and constructed into one-foot squares.” Besides the obvious beauty of the pattern and texture, what’s most appealing is the price and the ability to customize its size. A 9×12 is only $450, making it an affordable option for larger spaces. And since it is comprised of many small squares, you can stitch on additional squares to create any size or shape desired.
Ever since Rush House was founded in 2020, we’ve seen this rug time and time again. On the cover of Veranda, in the entryway of Gil Schafer’s house by the sea, and in nearly every room of this Floridian home designed by Jake Arnold. In fact, in 2023, it received significant press coverage, yet here we are 2 years later, still choosing the same rug. Which begs the question, how is it still so popular?
When an element is used repeatedly among designers, it almost always trickles down into the mainstream. When that happens, there’s an inevitable trend exhaustion that results from overuse. But not this rug. Perhaps it hasn’t yet reached the level of overuse that produces exhaustion, but regardless, the rug contains two timeless qualities that establish stylistic longevity.
Since the rise of the Original Rush House rug, other retailers are making similar options with a clear nod to the “original.” This jute rug, in particular, has a similar look, comes in 4 colors, and has several extra-large sizes available!
All this to say, if you’re looking for a timeless rug that provides textural, visual, and economical interest (that also just so happens to be designer-approved), you know what to do. 😉
