As with every bathroom countertop, it’s one part counter and 2 parts charging station. Between Chris’ trimmer and our toothbrushes, our 2 week old bathroom already had a cluttered countertop problem. Solution: an in-drawer outlet. Last Saturday we set aside a couple hours to install an outlet in our vanity drawer and it was the simplest upgrade that made such a big difference!
The main thing I wanted with an in-drawer outlet was the ability to charge our toothbrushes and trimmer out of sight to eliminate counter clutter. So, I got an the Blade in-drawer outlet from Docking Drawer. Some of our gadgets charge with a plug and others use a USB cable, so I got an outlet that has both options.
If you want an in-drawer outlet too, Docking Drawer has a really helpful quiz to help you choose which outlet would work best in your drawer. (P.S. their Blade outlets can also be installed in kitchen cabinets, nightstands, office drawers…any drawer honestly.)
All you need to install the outlet in a drawer is a drill, a screwdriver, and a jigsaw.
You’ll need to remove the drawer from your vanity so you can cut out a hole in the back of the drawer where the outlet will be. The outlet comes with a template that you can use as a guide for the placement of the outlet as well as the size of the hole that you’ll need to cut. I placed the template where I wanted the outlet, marked the placement, and drilled four holes in the corners. Then I cut out the rectangle using a jigsaw.
HOT TIP: Put a couple blocks on the ground (spaced apart) and cover them with a towel so you can rest your drawer on them. Put the drawer handle in between the blocks so you’re drawer doesn’t rock as you make the cuts.
Install the drawer back into your vanity.
There’s an arm attached to the back of the outlet which holds and protects the outlet power cord and allows the outlet to slide with your drawer. That arm will be hidden behind the drawer once the outlet is installed. Slide the outlet (and the arm) through the hole that you just cut. Then screw the arm into the side of vanity and screw the outlet into the drawer to secure it into place.
Then plug the in-drawer outlet into the wall outlet behind the vanity. Screw on the plate cover and you’re done!
We can charge a trimmer, two toothbrushes, and we still have an outlet to spare. It’s a simple upgrade and it instantly eliminated our counter clutter! If you’re looking to clean off your counters and improve your drawer organization, check out Docking Drawer’s most popular in-drawer outlets!!
