Few things bring me more joy than pairing fabrics and patterns. Something about the trial and error, the joy that comes from unexpected pillow pairings, and the impact that a fresh set of pillows has on a room is unmatched. I know this isn’t a shared joy for everyone, so I took the liberty of making 6 pillow combinations for a variety of home styles. Shop the complete sets below or pick and choose from each combination to make your own unique pillow cocktail.
Here’s the thing about patchwork fabrics, they have an inherent homemade quality about them that elicits a sentimental feeling. They look like they’ve been passed down for generations with fabric scraps your great-grandma had leftover and I love the personal touch that it can add to a space. Any pillow or upholstery piece that features patchwork fabric has a leg up in the character department.
Pairing a collection of solid pillows is boring. Being creative with pattern combinations is not. I like to pair geometric patterns (stripes, plaids, windowpanes) with organic patterns (floral, paisley, toile). But beyond that, I focus on pairing large scale patterns with small motifs. This allows you to maintain visual balance amid a busy combination of patterns.
As the appreciation for historic design rises, the love for Grandma’s design taste has increased too. Dainty florals and pastels play a big role in Grandma Chic pillow styles, but with down inserts and higher quality fabrics, we can appreciate the feel too! Wayfair has so many incredible Grandma chic pillows that do this style justice.
I will always appreciate a well-executed retro home. The avocado greens paired with oranges and blues have a warmth that’s hard to replicate. This pillow combination honors the period without feeling like too much of a theme.
I could design a whole girl’s bedroom using these two pillows as my starting point. Baby blue would be my dominant color, sage green would be my secondary color, and little pops of yellow or red would make for a stunning little girl’s room. Notice I didn’t say pink? Not that pink is bad, but any color can work in a girl’s bedroom…blue and green included. For a twin bed, place the square pillow behind the lumbar pillow. For a full or queen bed, place two of the square pillows side by side and put one lumbar in front.
Since we’re being unconventional about the design of a child’s bedroom, let’s use florals in a boy’s bedroom too. The delicate green and tan floral pillow paired with a more masculine blue plaid feels appropriate yet doesn’t scream, “THIS IS A BOY’S ROOM.” Which is perhaps why I like this combination so much.
