READER ROOM VIRTUAL MAKEOVER – LAUNDRY ROOM LUXURY

This is my third Reader Room Virtual Makeover now and I’m having the best time creating these designs for your spaces! I’m learning that I definitely design best “as I go” meaning that I need to visualize and play around with pieces, colors, and layouts before I commit to a design. Today’s virtual makeover is all about making the often ignored portion of the home a space worth showing the guests! I selected a laundry room submitted by @helloimkim. You guys….I dream of having a laundry room this size! Ours is currently the corner of a hallway and I may or may not have dealt with jealousy as I created this virtual makeover…. 😉

When dissecting the room in it’s current state, I had 3 initial thoughts – 1) I noticed there are two windows which means you could go moody without making the space feel super dark. 2) There are a lot of height changes from the mudroom shelving to the cabinet in the corner. I’d love to simplify it. 3) The tall mudroom shelving blocks some light from the window on the left wall.

With these three things in mind, I have a few ideas that require a bit of construction and manual labor. I would replace the mudroom open shelving and the cabinet in the corner with a line of lower cabinets. To open up our view of the window on the left wall and to counterbalance the off centered window on the wall straight ahead, I’d add floor to ceiling cabinetry in the corner. All these cabinets can hold linens, soaps, or cleaning supplies. And since dirty clothes pile up quickly in laundry rooms, I’d dedicate a couple lower cabinets to hold slide out hampers for dirty clothes! (Ikea would be a great place to purchase budget friendly cabinetry.)

Now let’s turn to the wall where the washer and dryer sit. I love how much storage this room has already and I’d certainly keep the closet in the corner. After trying multiple different door colors, I realized I wanted the room to have more wood elements. So I found a stunning color of walnut in Foyr Neo’s catalog of materials and a dark wood door is exactly what the room needed!

I’m all about balance so I would mimic the shape and size of the door from the other side of the room where the shelf sits in the wall. I’d bring the shelving all the way to the floor and I’d line the shelves in the same wood as the door for an extra luxe look. Again, this adds more storage for your nice linens and you can add a set of baskets to tuck away little knick knacks.

I’d keep the laundry nook much the same with the exception of replacing the open shelf with a brass rod mounted to the ceiling for hanging freshly washed clothes! (A Beautiful Mess shared a great tutorial on how to create a rod similar to this.)

This laundry room is open to the hallway and I’d love to close it off just a touch to make it feel like a separate space. To do this I’d create an opening with a soft arch. This would also allow you to paint the laundry room a different color than the hallway. I’d consider the arch a bonus project because it’s certainly not necessary, but it’d take the space to the next level!

Like I said earlier, with all the natural light this room gets, you can afford to paint the walls, trim, and baseboards a moody color without it feeling like a dungeon. A deep blue (like Almost Charcoal, Elephant Gray, or Web Gray) would be absolutely stunning paired with the dark woods and brass accents. And for a bit of contrast, I’d paint the cabinetry a light beige (like “Accessible Beige”) with bronze knobs and pulls.

As for decor, you wouldn’t need much other than some wall art above the cabinets and maybe some foliage from your backyard for a touch of greenery! Throw down a traditional beige rug and I’d call this room complete!
