I almost didn’t click to this article because I thought “Change the knob? What kind of kitschy crafty thing will this be?” (I love a good hack, and the cheesy ones have their place, but I like neutral, calm, etc.)

Boy, you showed me. This was brilliant. I hate my bifold closet doors (and I really wish the contractor hadn’t convinced me they were necessary because they really weren’t). Finally, there is a way to make them look both interesting and elegant at the same time. I’m so impressed.

I think the keyhole plates will even work if you use a paint behind the keyhole to give the impression of darkness. Maybe a very, very dark gray?

Where did you buy the bifold doors?

Where did you but buy the bifold doors?

I fell in love with your closet door, and did the same for my daughters room, same paint color and all. I got very similar knobs and plates off an old door in the farmhouse I grew up in. My question is, how do you attach the knobs to the plate/door? I can’t wait to finish it!

    • Danica says:

I love it! We screwed the plates into the door and our knobs attached like regular kitchen cabinet knobs – screwed on from the back!

Thanks for the reply! Ours had a square spindle connecting them through the door, so they had a square hole in the back. We tried a two part epoxy glue but they fell off! 😂

I never saw this idea before. Excellent article. Thanks for the links too. In our modern leaning ranch we recently replaced all doors (Hurricane Ian) with 3-equal-panel shaker doors. Some are bi-fold and others by-pass. From the floor what height would you recommend placing the handle center? We’re using 4" cabinet pulls and the ceilings are 8′. Naturally we’ll be using your hack. Thanks very much!

    • Danica says:

Standard handle height is 34-36" from the ground to center so I’d recommend that! Love that you’re using this hack!

Stunning! For a simple fix, your bifold doors are elevated to a new level!
