How do I make this bedroom less sterile? I want to start playing with patterns and color but I’m not sure where to start. The bed in front of the window has always felt tricky to me so I added curtains, but now I’m thinking I should have done blinds. (The crib is there temporarily until our baby gets a little older, usually we have a dresser there.

Last week I released a new series about creating a color palette for your home so it’s only fitting that today’s Dear Danica post is all about adding color to this bedroom!
WHAT I LOVE
You mentioned that you weren’t confident in your choice to add curtains behind the bed frame but I actually love that you did! It’s always tricky when you have a window behind your bed, but adding curtains is a unique way to create dimension and a focal point to an otherwise (sometimes) awkward wall.
Love that you hung your curtain rod high and wide on both walls to elongate the height of your ceiling. Love your headboard and the lumbar pillow too!
WHAT I’D CHANGE
You want color and pattern so let’s get some color in this room! How do you feel about red and green?
First off, I’d paint the bedroom a midtone green to jump start your color journey. Evergreen Fog by Sherwin Williams is a beautiful midtone green that has just enough depth to feel cozy, yet it’s not so dark that it’ll make the room feel like a black hole.
While I like your existing curtains, I like the idea of using curtains as the primary pattern and focal point of the room even more. I’d add these patterned blue-green curtains to play off of the green walls while also introducing a complementary color – red. These would be an investment piece, but I found ways to save in other areas of your bedroom so you can spend more on the curtains.
Your existing headboard and white bedding can stay and serve as the neutral elements of the room. But I’d play around with patterns and colors through pillows and a quilt. These checkered redish-brown pillows are a beautiful backdrop to this floral ivory and green lumbar pillow. And to top off the bedding, I’d throw this stunning Indian kantha quilt at the end of your bed.
It looks like you have a really spacious and long bedroom, so let’s take advantage of the length that you have! I’d add a bench to the end of your bed to take up some more real estate. Either this wrought iron & velvet bench or this budget friendly leather bench would be my picks.
As for your nightstands, I would paint them black and add these brass pulls. If you’re not up for a DIY project, you can buy this beautiful 3 drawer nightstand. But you’ll save yourself loads of money by DIYing the ones you have.
And since we’re making all these changes, let’s swap out that boob light for a stunning brass semi-flush mount like this one! It’ll make all the difference!
SOMETHING TO NOTE:
If you’re nervous about adding this much color to your bedroom, add color in phases. First add the colorful pillows and blankets to your bedding. Then add the curtains. And if you want to keep the color coming, paint the walls.

Hi Nadine! Can you recommend a more subtle way to introduce the red and green pairing? The drapes are pretty, but have more pattern and contrast than I’m looking for. Thanks for all the expertise you share!
