One thing I love about this blog is that I have the opportunity to give interior design tips and advice. But I’ll be the first to admit that I’m still learning! I think we all are to be honest! Trends change, design ‘do’s and don’ts’ shift, and we’re all just trying to stay current right? Well today is one of those days where I’m going to share something I recently learned.
Last year I shared some tips about curtain placement do’s and dont’s – like how high to hang your rod and how wide your curtains should be. I still stand by everything I said, but there is one thing that I’ve learned since then that I have to share!
A while back I was scrolling Instagram and I came across this beautiful bedroom refresh that Chris Loves Julia tackled. It’s stunning and I was instantly drawn to the window treatments because they make the room feel grand. The curtain rods are near the ceiling (like I recommend in my last post) and the panels reach the floor (another tip I recommend in my last post). But the main thing (in my opinion) that makes the room feel grand is the fact that there are curtain panels hanging on both sides of the windows.
Listen, this double panel concept is not new and it’s not like this idea has never crossed my mind before; but for some reason when I saw the image above something clicked in my head.
I’ve always had the mindset that single (or narrow) windows only need one panel on one side of the window. I mean, technically one panel would cover the whole window when closed. But as soon as I saw the single window in the bedroom photo above with two curtain panels on each side of the window, I realized how much balance and symmetry that brings to the space. (I’m a major symmetry fan if you can’t tell)
So I took note and decided to make that change in my own home.

It’s such a simple change but what a difference that made! Nothing was technically wrong with my single curtain panel in the living room but as soon as I added a second, it instantly felt more balanced and grand.
Before converting our guest bedroom into an office, I decided to do the same in this space as well and I’m equally as impressed with how much I love the look.
So the window treatment trick I learned – use two curtain panels on both wide and single windows to create a balanced and grand feel.

Love love love your style! Exactly what I’m going for in my house. We’re actually redoing our living room right now and we have a 12ft window (finally took down the god awful vertical blinds) in the front with 2 baseboard registers beneath it. The problem with going to the floor with the curtains would be that they would cover the registers and the heat would just go behind the curtains – what would you suggest?
Oh thank you Kelly! In your case I would suggest incorporating both shades and curtains. The roll shades (like bamboo for example) could serve as your privacy and the floor to ceiling curtains could stay stationary on the sides for aesthetics! Hopefully that helps! 🙂
