What is it about the English country style that is so appealing? Perhaps it’s the muted palette of colors and unfussy aesthetic that creates a welcoming atmosphere. Or is it the plush seating and abundance of mismatched patterns that say, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously here.” Maybe it’s the opportunity to slip away to an idyllic setting in a land far away that relieves the stresses of the day. Whatever the reason, I’ve designed a living room that embodies the English Country style for an American home. Copy and recreate this look below –

An English Country color palette draws inspiration from the outdoors. Green, yellow, plum, and blue are the colors for this living room design. Green will serve as the primary color, red/plum/blush will be the accent color, and blue, yellow, and gold will provide pops of color.
For the wall color, I chose French Gray by Farrow & Ball. It’s a muted green that isn’t too pronounced – a perfect backdrop to an English Country living room.
To anchor the space, I’m starting with a handwoven jute and cotton blend rug with a subtle wide stripe. Make sure it’s large enough to fit under all the feet of your furniture! The green wall color plays nice with the oxblood leather sofa, the striped scroll armchair, and the fully upholstered chair depicting a woodland scene. Paired with a navy pillow-top ottoman (admittedly, it’s a splurge), the mix of patterns is more than fitting for the style. As for the coffee table, rather than a wood table, I opted for a pair of upholstered cocktail ottomans in a bold stripe.
One key element of an English country house is that nothing is too matchy-matchy. So for the end tables, I chose a different size and style for each. A black solid wood table, a rattan side table, and a turned wood stool.
An English home is not complete without a pine chest of drawers like this one. (Tip: Keep the orange-toned wood. Don’t sand, bleach or strip it of it’s coloring!)
Throw pillows in plum, blue, and beige complement the sofa wonderfully while a trio of lamps set the mood. Get the look of a high-end designer lamp by pairing this affordable brass floor lamp with this pleated lamp shade cover. The blue ceramic lamp and the vintage tole lamp serve as stylish task lights. For the artwork, I paired a sunset landscape from my free art collection with this floral drawing, one cascading from the other.
As for the window treatments, I love these Chik blinds. The delicacy of the bamboo held in place with a threaded pattern strikes the perfect balance between intricacy and simplicity.
With all these elements combined, you’ll find yourself in the midst of an elevated English Country home. What style would you like me to design next?
