I think the answer is entirely up to your personal preference! Some people are symmetry driven and love having a set of pillows that match on either end of the couch. If you prefer this route, my only advice is to not get too matchy-matchy. Having the same pattern or pillow combo repeated too frequently can look overdone, but a matching pair for the two armchairs OR the couch is certainly acceptable!
For my own home, I like a variety. I prefer all different pillows that have complimentary colors and patterns. Picking a color palette and finding subtly different patterns within that palette creates variety without chaos. Maybe a large collection of pillows is the pattern and interest that your living room is missing or perhaps you feel overwhelmed by that many pillows. A pillow combo on one end of the couch and just a throw blanket draped over the arm on the other side is a great way to keep variety without having to find 5-7 different pillows that work well together.
Now the question becomes, do you want your pillows to play a supporting role in the room’s design or do you want them to stand out? A tone on tone look fills the space without demanding attention. On the flip side, contrasting colors and bold patterns are a perfect way to add some pattern to a sofa or chair that may not otherwise grab your attention on its own. There’s not a right or wrong answer to this one.
Let’s get the ball rolling with these throw pillows and covers below. TIP: Combine geometric and floral pillows to create your perfect pairing!
