If you remember a few weeks back, Chris and I installed the wood slat ceiling in our primary bedroom and while that was taking place we also put in a recessed light. With the size of the room, we didn’t need much to light it. And with the low ceilings, we wanted something as low profile as possible. Although I wasn’t excited about it, I *thought* a recessed light was our best option. I was wrong. The light just reflected directly into my eyes and oddly enough it didn’t light the room very well.
So onto plan B…a flush mount light! To soften the light from shining in our eyes, I want something with an opal glass shade and I also want something in the brass family.
I’ve narrowed it down to my top 20 and I *think* I made my decision, but I’m already second guessing it so help me pick!

#3 and #9 would be my first picks but my wallet disagrees. #5, #12, and #13 are all from my favorite Etsy light shop but they’d all hang too low in our bedroom. The shop does take custom orders though….
There are a few factors playing into our decision. Overall height should ideally be around 4” or less to allow for plenty of room to walk underneath without hitting our heads. (#LowCeilingProblems) A warm brass vs a bright brass is probably best given the cabin vibe of our home. An opal glass shade should soften the harshness of the light. And lastly the light temperature should match the rest of our home (4000k). A lot of flush mounts come with LED lights in the standard 3000K temperature which means we need something that we could buy our own bulbs for. This eliminates a lot of the options I have listed above.
I think #6 is our top pick as long as the brass isn’t too bright. The opal glass shade should soften the light, it’s less than 4” tall, and it requires bulbs so it seems to check all the boxes. Plus it gets bonus points for being less than $50!! My fear is that the brass won’t be the right color, but I suppose worst case scenario I could just paint it.
Which is your favorite?!

You have great taste so I’m sure you will pick the right one! They are all really cute but I think #18.
🙂 Thanks Rachel! #18 is a good classic light!
I like #3 and I like #4 and #17. Both are a bit different from the standard. Looking forward to seeing the reveal.
Thanks for you input Charisse! I’m obsessed with #3!!
Danica: I’m newer to your site. I think maybe a couple of months. I just wanted to let you know that I actually have the #6 light from Shades of Light. I have it is the water closet. It’s fairly small and unobtrusive. I really like it. Very nice quality for a low price. The glass is very soft. I would be very happy to send you pics and try to compare it to other matte gold items so you could “see” it and get a better idea. Just let me know. I really love your site. You and I have an overall different aesthetic, but you combine things in such a wonderful way and I learn something new with every post. Total fun! Thank you for all you share. Julie
That’s really kind of you Julie! Omg I’d love to see a photo of the light! You can either send a pic to me via DM on Instagram or by email at hello@nadinestay.com. Thank you!!! 🙂
