This week I shared how Chris and I installed a stair runner in our entryway and I’m proud to report that not only does it look great, it actually looks custom made as well – like the runner was made specifically for our steps. That’s all thanks to a repeatable pattern on the runner and some research on how to install it properly. In the end, we saved hundreds of dollars by choosing a ready-made runner as opposed to a custom bound runner.
I chose this handwoven jute and cotton runner with a subtle ivory stripe. It provides just enough pattern to be interesting, but it’s simple enough that it acts as a neutral. There are so many readymade runners that would make great stair runners. Wayfair carries some great rug brands (including Loloi) so that’s a great place to start your search. To jumpstart your hunt, I rounded up a handful of runners that I love!
Striped Stair Runners
I love the look of a stripe that cascades down the staircase. The bolder the stripe, the more stately it is. If your space needs a little drama, opt for a striped runner.
Hint: Look for a stripe that runs the full length of the runner as opposed to stripes that run horizontally. Full length stripes elongate the staircase.
Traditional Stair Runners
Staircases inherently have a harsh feel about them. All the sharp angles and hardwood can benefit from the softness of a traditional runner with a delicate organic pattern.
Tip: Avoid runners with a prominent border. Once installed, they can look like separate rugs rather than one continuous unit. A faded border is ok since that leans into a patchwork vintage runner vibe.
Solid Stair Runners
When in doubt, a solid runner is a perfect foundation for the rest of your home. It acts as a neutral, taking on a supporting role to the surrounding more eye-catching design elements of the home.
Good To Know: Avoid runners with fringe on the ends. You’ll need bound ends that look finished for both the top and bottom of the staircase.
