Remember this view? The dreaded 1.5 year project this tiny guest bedroom/office turned out to be!
We gutted and remodeled this bedroom and nearly finished it before we realized we needed to covert it into a home office. There was one major pain point in this room…the left window! The positioning was weird and it didn’t leave enough space for a bed without the headboard covering some of the window.
I love windows that flank a bedroom wall because it creates a natural spot for the bed to go…AND it creates a feature wall! But as you can see we don’t have a ton of wall space so we took the left window out and replaced it with these two “between the stud” windows on each end. A queen bed fits perfectly in between and it still brings in a ton of natural light!
So where did we get our skinny windows? Zabitat! Zabitat makes glass inserts for doors and they come in a huge variety of sizes and styles. The windows we purchased are actually sidelights that are intended to go next to a front door, but because they still function like a regular window we installed them as windows!
They were super reasonably priced too – $100 each compared to upwards of $500 for a comparable product. The only catch is that we had to build the frames ourselves. But thankfully that’s not too difficult to do with the help of some reliable Youtube tutorials.
These windows would be so perfect in a little nook, a small room, or even a hallway. So many possibilities! Hopefully this gives you some ideas for your own home!

It’s been so long that I don’t remember the exact videos we referenced anymore, sorry! But if you search for sidelight installation and ‘how to frame a window’ videos there will be plenty that pop up.
We have skinny windows like this in our bedroom! I’ve been struggling with a curtain option for them. Do you have any suggestions? They had an opaque film that we peeled off to let in more light, it would be nice to have something to cover them with for privacy at night. Everything we’ve tried just doesn’t look great. Would love ideas!
I’ve been pondering the window covering situation myself and I think the best option (for us at least) will be to just make our own linen roman shades or maybe even roller shades.
Maybe little shutters on each side, then you can close both and open both quickly. You can even make them match the decor in your space.
We had all our windows replaced last fall. Our house was built in 1931 and had the original windows. Some we couldn’t open, We spent about $23,000 on Pella windows! had no idea windows are so expensive. The new windows has made our house warmer in the winter (we live in MIchigan), and no longer gets ice on the inside of the windows. Thus, our heating bill was not as high.. I guess we won’t be remodeling our kitchen any time soon.
It’s crazy how quickly new windows add up! Well worth the investment though and I’m sure the new windows look beautiful too!
