So you have some artwork that you need printed? I got you! With digital download art becoming more and more mainstream, that raises two common questions – “where should I get my art printed?” and “what paper should I print it on?” First let’s cover our bases.
Many online art shops offer digital download art. After purchasing the artwork from their shop, you will instantly receive an email with a link to download the artwork file onto your computer. From there you can choose to print the artwork from home or have it printed professionally.
A few of my favorite digital download shops are Shop Vintage Supply, Splendus, and James Coats Fine Art or you get check out my own collection of free vintage art.
You have options here! You can check out a local print shop, the FedEx printing office, or Staples for in-store printing. FedEx was my go to before I found an online printer I love. Mpix.com is my new go-to. Production and shipping is insanely fast, prices are really reasonable, and they have paper options to pick from!
If you’re in a pinch, you can also print artwork from home if you have a good quality printer and the right kind of paper. I like this textured inkjet paper and I used printable canvas sheets a lot back in the day.
I’d like to preface this by saying that I am not an expert in this department. I’ve simply read and learned over the years from people that are experts.
My rule of thumb is to print on the type of material that I assume the original was on for the most authentic look. I like to print my artwork on either canvas or fine art paper. I’ve done both and loved the results!
Canvas is perfect for paintings. Because digital paintings often have “texture” within the print, canvas is the ideal backdrop to make that texture feel realistic. Fine art paper in a matte finish is great for sketches and drawings or any piece that doesn’t have a ton of texture within the print. And if the print shop offers it, request Giclee printing. (Mpix does!) It’s a higher quality form of printing that gives you the richest, most accurate colors.
