Last week I shared a progress report on where we’re at with our cedar shingle siding project and since then we made a lot of progress! Like….WE FINISHED!!! Every wall, every row, and every tedious corner cut. Seeing cedar siding on this room after 2 years of daydreaming feels pretty exhilarating!
I have one more thing I want to do before taking finished photos – Landscaping! Honestly, the whole house needs a complete overhaul in the landscaping department, but for now I just want to zhush up this little section.
I played around in Canva and this is my initial thought –
There’s a cement pad where the back door used to be and since we can’t plant anything in the ground back there, my plan is to add mulch and a potted plant instead. There’s also a large (unused) well under the big window and I’m not 100% sure how we’re going to disguise that. Most likely I’ll paint it black to match the mulch, but someone on Instagram suggested adding a fountain or some sort of water feature on top which sparked some ideas.
As for plants, I’ve been back and forth on the vibe that I want. Initially I envisioned a row of evergreen shrubs, but after perusing the nurseries I fell in love with white flowering bushes. I picture that feeling really whimsical and magical and this cedar room already feels a little like a storybook to me so I’m going for flowers. I showed Chris the photo above and his first thought was, “That’s a lot of the same thing.” So the type and varieties of flowers we’ll pick is still up for debate…but you get the vibe I’m going for.
I’ve never done landscaping before so I feel kinda lost when it comes to selecting plants and the layout. This is an art that I clearly have no experience in, but I’m welcoming the challenge with the expectation that Chris will take the lead on research.
Other Notable Things –
Did you know that bedroom windows have special codes that other windows don’t have? If you’re remodeling, read this.
I’ve tried a LOT of mom jeans, dad jeans, straight leg jeans, and wide leg jeans and I swear I look like I have a diaper butt in every one of them. But these….THESE are the ones! Flattering on the butt and thighs and straight from the knees down. (Pay attention to the length. These are made longer and I ordered extra-short for a slightly cropped length.)
Still obsessed. A couple questions you have about our new chairs – Are they comfy? Yes! I’d consider them a medium-firm sit which I like because the cushions hold their shape. Is the slipcover removable? No. Cleaning with a damp cloth is recommended.
Of all the dried florals I bought, it’s clear you love these the most!
These shoes make me look cool…right!? 🙂 Clomping around until they break in though. ha!

Finally found a link to the plants I put on our front porch – Yew Brownii is what they’re called.
As for the planters on our porch that you wanted links for, they’re from Home Goods but I searched far and wide for a lookalike and this set is pretty dang close. Don’t forget to line the inside with plastic and add a drainage hole if you want to plant real plants.

Hi, Nadine! First, I have to tell you that I love your blog and your design style. I’m looking at the rocker / table combo you have on your porch and would like to know how the pieces have held up and if you are pleased with the quality so far? I’d appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much! Tara Lynch
Hi Tara! We love our rockers! They’re still in perfect condition and we just bring the cushions inside when it’s going to rain to keep those as clean as possible.
