you really should correct or clarify your suggestion that Ikea kitchen cabinets are customizable. They are not. You cannot order an 11 inch or a 17 inch or a 33 inch cabinet if that’s what your space needs. Ikea cabinet dimensions are strictly limited.
At last glance i think the base cabinets came in 8, 12, 15, 18, 21, and a few other fixed widths.
One wall of our new kitchen area for instance (where the 30" range had to go) measured 101 inches (where it hit an immovable column). and needed two corner cabinets. Deducting the 30 left 71". Ikea corners are either 38 or 47inches (that’s it) wide so 2 x corner + range was impossible
wall cabinets come in even fewer sizes.
we spent hours playing with the ikea kitchen planner before concluding it was basically impossible.
what you might mean i think is that the overall design or layout is quite customizable. Within the constraints of their fixed widths that is more true.
And having said all the above, in our previous house an Ikea kitchen fit perfectly and so we went that route, have been extremely pleased with that kitchen and would happily have gone Ikea again had it fit our new space.

Your kitchen looks great! I am wondering if you can see the base cabinet between the cupboard doors? We are installing an IKEA kitchen with Kungsbacka doors as well but the white cabinets are very visible behind the drawer fronts. Your kitchen looks so good, our goal is for something just close to what you have done! Thanks!

Hi Crystal! Thank you so much! We installed the brown cabinet boxes for this very reason. There are a few spots where you can see some of the cabinet boxes behind the doors, but because they’re so close in color to our black doors, it’s not noticeable at all. White cabinet boxes will be more obvious and you may want to paint the fronts of the boxes to match your doors.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on IKEA. This isnvery helpful. We are about to plan such kitchen. How can I know which are the low quality? For example what do you think about askersund cabinets?

    • Danica says:

I think looking for a thin film over the cabinet fronts is a good place to start. A lower price may be a good indicator as well!

Love your kitchen. Where did you buy your appliances ?is it a gas cooktop? And oven or is it a gas range combo

  5. Madeleine says:

Hi! Did you guys add custom crown molding to bring your cabinets to the ceiling, or was that an IKEA add on? Thanks!

    • Danica says:

Ooh good question! We cut strips from a cover panel to fill the gap and then we used a piece of trim along the ceiling to finish it off. Both were from Ikea and matched the color of our Ikea cabinets!

  6. lana says:

Hi, did you youse white or dark brown inside of the kungsbacka cabinets? Did you use finishing boards as well?

    • Danica says:

We chose the brown cabinets boxes because with our black doors, if there’s any gap between the doors you’d be able to see white cabinet boxes and shelves much easier than brown. And yep, we installed matching panels to cover all the exposed sides and fronts.

Did you also buy the Ikea appliances? If yes, how do you find their performance?

  10. anette says:

What countertops did you buy? Are they Ikea also?

    • Danica says:

We purchased Solid Surface countertops from Home Depot. They’re a budget friendly alternative and we’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well they’re holding up!

    Very nice article. Thank you!

Hi Danica,I noticed you have the exact layout of kitchen I am planning for my own home. How do you find the layout of fridge/sink/stove in terms of work flow and convenience?? We are thinking of getting the same cabinets you have and I’m happy to hear you’re satisfied!!Thank you!

  13. skhan says:

Hello!I am considering the kungsbacka for my house next year. How is the kitchen holding up now that you are into 1+ year?Any suggestions and tips?

    • Danica says:

We still love the kungsbacka fronts and would definitely install this Ikea kitchen again! No scuffs or scratches after 1 1/2 years of use. The only draw back to the kungsbacka cabinets are that greasy fingers to eventually start to show up. A quick wipe down with a wet, soapy rag usually does the trick!

  14. lauren says:

Have you found that the kungsbacka fronts show scratches/fingerprints easily?

    • Danica says:

I was nervous about scratches but we’ve had our cabinets for almost a year now and not one scratch! Fingerprints do start to show after some time but we do a quick wipe down of the fronts with soap and water every few months and that takes care of it!
