Perhaps the #1 most popular design trend of 2020 and 2021 is old world pottery. And the #2 most popular trend is making your own! Bloggers and design enthusiasts everywhere have been practicing and perfecting the art of a faux distressed pottery finish and I can confidently say that I think we’ve nailed it!
I’ve seen countless incredibly realistic “aged” vases, textured lamps, and weathered terra cotta pots. And I noticed that a lot of the techniques are super similar, but subtle changes in material, color, or even the order in which you do things can drastically change the end result. So today we’re gonna learn from the bloggers who nailed the faux old world look.
BY MY VINTAGE PORCH
A little brown, a little terra cotta orange, a little chipped, and 100% perfect! My Vintage Porch knocked this pot outta the park!
BY NADINE STAY
I tackled this subtly aged look on a bright red thrift store lamp and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The dirty ivory finish is all the aging this piece needed!
BY JENNA SUE DESIGN
The rocky, natural texture of this large hypertufa planter is spot on! And since this style is so expensive to buy new…why not make it?! You’re in good hands with Jenna’s super clear tutorial.
BY NADINE STAY
I meannn….it’s the layers that make it feel authentic and these two vases are bringing it with the layers. I got two different looks using two very similar techniques and it’s easier than it looks…I promise.
BY JACI DAILY
From what I understand, Jaci was the first to come up with the “dirt treatment” which is THE easiest (and most popular) found pottery method you can do! A black undercoat with dirt….it’s about as simple as that. Check out her instagram to watch it happen in real time! (P.S. I did this same treatment on this thrift store lamp and it worked wonders. Watch here.)
BY KINANDKASA
Ryia is the queen of DIY and my love for her hypertufa, plaster, mossy vase is real! She shared all the steps on her Instagram account here.
BY SUNNY SIDE DESIGN
Michelle used the incredibly popular Pottery Barn artisan vases as inspiration when she created these ultra textured vases with a trio of colors.
BY CASS MAKES HOME
Turns out all you need is a little limewash glaze to make bright orange terra cotta look naturally aged and Cass shows how to (and how not to) get this beautiful final result. If you’re looking for a slightly more antique terra cotta look, Natalie from My Vintage Porch also has a good technique she used.
BY CRAFTBERRY BUSH
If you’re a visual learner, Craftberry Bush put together a really helpful video showing exactly how she made these faux concrete pots. The distressed finish with cracks is gold!
Which one will you try? I think I’m up for a weekend hypertufa planter party, how about you?!
