Chris and I coined 2021 as the year of surprise expenses which unfortunately took most of the money we had set aside for renovations. Most projects I hoped to at least start were put on hold and I’m really hopeful that this year we’ll be able to get back on track.
We sat down last week and made an updated (realistic) list for this upcoming year and I’m really excited about what we have planned for 2022 –
1. Finish The Bedroom
Our bedroom was the only project we tackled last year and while it technically never got finished, it was a surprise that we even started it in the first place! Because we thought we had to replace the (very low) roof, we assumed this project was going to be one of the last we did. But Chris found a way to make our roof work which meant we could renovate the bedroom immediately.
We started demo on March 20, 2021 and because this is the only bedroom in the house, our main goal was to get it to a livable state again as quickly as possible. I think we were sleeping on the living room floor for about a month before we were able to move back into the bedroom. But once we hit that point, I halted a lot of the progress when I couldn’t find the finishes (dresser, light, comforter, etc).
Some things are still unfinished (like finding a light), but I think my goal at this point is to just wrap up what I can. Hang artwork, style the nightstands, hem up the curtains, and call it done for now! I’ve shared photos of this room already but a proper reveal, a “how to” for the wood slat ceiling and planked walls, and links to everything is my #1 priority for 2022.
2. Reside the Bedroom Exterior
Remember when we thought this was going to happen before winter last year!? Ha! Our plan has been/still is to install cedar shingles on the last unfinished portion of our exterior and we ordered the materials last October in hopes that we’d be able to install before December. We were given a 6 week (max) lead time and of course we expected that to be best case scenario. Which it was by a long shot.
Long story short, we got word about a month ago that our cedar shakes arrived, but not all of them. After another month of trying to track down the missing boxes, I was finally notified that the rest arrived on Monday and we’re able to pick them up this week!
Now, we’re just waiting on the weather to warm up a bit so we can get started!
3. The Laundry Room/Passthrough
The laundry room and passthrough are begging for some attention. The laundry room sits right off the kitchen and with no door separating the spaces, the unfinished mess is visible at all times. We started work a year and a half ago when we were prepping for new siding – taking out two doors and adding in a window. Then last year we gutted the space (mostly) when we gutted the bedroom thinking that we’d get to this project a lot faster than we did.
The main goal of this space is to open up the dividing wall between the laundry and passthrough and possibly add a closet. Currently, they’re two very tight rooms with our washer and dryer tucked in the corner. No overhead lights, the same low ceiling as our bedroom, sloping floors, and a step down we’ll have to work with. Some elements of this room are already decided, but a lot is still up in the air.
4. Start Landscaping
IF the stars align and we haven’t totally blown our budget, I’d love to rip out the unkept rock that currently serves as our landscaping. I feel like we keep putting this on our list as a “if we have time” project and inevitably we never do. So this still feels like a far off project, but putting in proper edging with mulch and plants (at least just on the front of the house) sounds like a manageable start to what will someday be a larger project.
These are the major projects, and I suspect there will be smaller things sprinkled in like furniture flips, room refreshes, and art swaps. But I like to reserve those projects for when I’m feeling creative. Stay tuned, once we pick a “start date” it’s full steam ahead!
