This made me smile as I’ve just come in from spending a day in the woodshop, mostly on my own. I’m a novice (but very devoted) woodworker, having caught the bug a couple of years ago. I started with a small lathe, which quickly got exchanged for a larger, more powerful lathe. Then I realised I wanted to cut my laminate my own turning blanks, so we got a bandsaw. After that, I realised I needed to cut and mill the rougher wood I was buying, so we got a miter saw, thickness planer and jointer…and you get the picture. I love the satisfaction of creating something with my own hands. I’m also a woman who loves to wear corsets, tiaras and bustle gowns…though not while in the workshop. 😁

However, I agree with you about the frustration caused by other people’s presumptions. Around a year ago, I was in a wood and hardware store with my husband as I wanted a new lathe chuck and some wood, and when my husband went to ask something at the checkout, the staff member jokingly asked if he was hiding from “the finance department” (pointing to me) so he could buy things. My hubby put him right on his misconceptions, explaining that I was the main woodworker in our household. Thankfully, they now know me in that store, but it shows that some things haven’t changed…

I know this post is from 7 years ago and you may not even read this, but I hope you’re still creating and restoring beautiful things. We need more women in the field!

  2. For women woodworkers, the journey often begins with breaking down stereotypes and overcoming societal expectations. Whether it’s navigating the often-male-dominated spaces of workshops and lumberyards or facing skepticism and surprise from peers and customers, women in woodworking must often prove themselves and assert their skills and knowledge. However, these challenges only serve to strengthen their resolve and deepen their passion for the craft.

I usually don’t post comments, but I just wanted to thank you for being awesome! I always feel that because I am a girl I am not supposed to enjoy woodworking but secretly I love it! Ever since I got my first hand sander I was hooked. I am married and my husband has a ( its better than it was) attitude. I don’t like that. I think if its worth doing you should do it well. Also you can save alot of money to repair or redo most items. I also hate them coming up to me at the home depot! Can I help you. Probably not. Lol!!! P.s. I just got my first router too! I love it! Take care , Chrissy

So glad you’re doing what you love! It’s the most fulfilling feeling in the world to complete a project you didn’t think you could! 🙂
